Christmas At My House

I was thinking about the holidays and what different people do to celebrate. My family celebrates Christmas, and in my house, we have an entire SCHEDULE for Christmas morning, along with a very specific breakfast, and method of opening gifts.

I love the way Christmas morning works out because it creates a tradition and we know what to expect, but still leaves an air of mystery.

So, Schedule.

7:59 : My sister and I wait outside my parents bedroom because we can't wake them up until 8:00.

8:00 : Pounce! We jump on the bed and wake up my parents, telling them "It's Christmas!" and "Get up, we need to open stockings!"

***Note: the rest of these times are approximate, we don't have set times after 8:00.***

8:15 : We all head down stairs together. (Nobody is allowed downstairs until everybody is ready) We all sit on the couches where our stockings were put the night before and look through our goodies.

8:30 : We go around and share what we got in our stockings, one at a time, youngest to oldest. That means me first, then my sister Fiona, then my mom, and lastly my dad.

9:00 : My mom and I head to the kitchen to finish breakfast. I say finish because we make as much as possible ahead of time and the night before. We usually have some sort of coffee cake, bacon, sometimes eggs or potatoes and our special fruit salad with cinnamon stars. (These are just pie crust cut into stars and sprinkled with lots of cinnamon sugar, but they are so tasty it's crazy!)

9:30 : We eat our special breakfast and talk about how the year has gone for each of us. We have specific dishes that we only use on Christmas morning, including cups that Fiona and I have had since we were tiny. (Although, last year, Fiona's broke and it caused many tears and heartbreak. My mother and I are looking for a way to repurpose it, but that's for another post.)

10:15 : We clear and wash all the dishes. Nobody can open a single present until all the dishes are washed, dried and put away, and the kitchen is clean. (This has driven Fiona and I crazy for years, especially because the presents are just sitting there calling to us to open them.)

10:45 We all head to the living room for gift opening! My sister and I used to argue about who got to "play Santa" and pick which gifts people should open next, but now we share that job. When opening gifts, we go youngest to oldest again, which means me first, then Fiona, mom, and finally dad. One gift at a time, we share it with the rest of the family and move on to the next person. Once dad is done opening his gift, we cycle back to me. This can take up to an hour or two, depending on how many gifts are under the tree and how excited people are over them. (This can cause stopping and laughing or tackling hugs etc. It's great.)

12:00 : We pick up the wrapping paper, take all of our gifts to where they belong and usually everybody but my mom falls asleep.

Tada!
Our Christmas morning, every single year. Times change a little every year, depending on how long we sit at breakfast etc. But it's my favorite day of the year, no question. We usually have Christmas dinner with extended family, somewhere else. However we have been known to stay in all day and eat dinner at home.

What do you do for the holidays? What do you wear to family gatherings? Do you dress up during the holidays, or does your wardrobe stay casual?

Comment and tell me! Happy Holidays!

Goals, Dreams and Life - It's ALL Your Choice

Many thoughts have been swirling in my head lately. I've been thinking more "bigger picture" then I usually do, so I thought I'd share some of it.

It's all started because I've been feeling really lethargic lately, and I know I really need to start exercising again. I was in Karate for 6 and a half years and I earned my black belt in sixth grade. I did quit soon after for very silly reasons that I don't believe anymore. Anyways, my mom bought the P90X workout program last year for the family, so I think I'm going to start that up pretty soon. I really want to get back into daily exercising, because of the health benefits. I sleep so much better, I'm less crabby, and I have a happier disposition.

Right now the only way I exercise is dancing in my room to loud music. I can work up a sweat pretty fast, because I absolutely love to dance. If my family had the money, I would be in dance lessons. I don't know which kind, but probably either hip hop, break dancing, or some sort of dance team. Sadly, we don't have the money, so dancing around my room it is.

When I exercise I really like the boot camp type of workout. I love that feeling you get once you've completed your 50th pushup in a row, no matter how much you're going to feel it the next day. Or the feeling after a workout when you feel charged and ready for anything, alert and happy. the happy is what really gets me, I like to feel happy. I don't know anybody who doesn't but I like this natural HEALTHY way to feel happy. I've been struggling with fitting in a work out, where to work out, it sounds boring, what to do for exercise, etc.

However, I've come to this conclusion that you don't really need a fancy gym membership or a thousand workout DVD's. You can work out just fine with some music that gets you pumped and moving. Even if all you can handle is walking, try to find a route that has a slope, or even a big hill, because even if you don't get to the top the first time, you always have next time, and the time after that. If you don't make it up that hill the first try, or the second, just think about how much happier you are going to feel the minute you reach the top of that hill for the first time. It's all down hill from there and you are on your way to a healthy life style and healthy living.

And here's where the big thinking came in. It's taken me several days to mull this over, which is why I didn't post it right away. See, the secret to getting big things in life done or reaching large goals is baby steps. You can't become an olympic swimmer overnight, no matter what the movies tell you. It's just not possible. But with patience, endurance, willpower and positivity, you can succeed at anything you put your mind to. Whether that be losing 5 pounds or having a consistently clean house, or even just a clean car. Even if all you can do is put a trash can in your car and remind people to use it, that could make the world a different place for your passengers. Simply empty the garbage when you fill up the tank and your car is on it's way to being clutter-free. Little things like a messy car may seem small, but if you had a bad day, and you sit down in a car that's nice and tidy, you'd be surprised how much it can brighten your day.

Your life is what you choose to make it. I know I'm young, and I know I'm not an expert, but seriously. If something is making you really unhappy, maybe it's time to do some problem solving about it. You would be surprised at how much that one thing, or ten things, can drive you nuts, and you might not even be aware of it. Think about what's bothering you, and I'm guessing that there will be something you can do about it. The choice is always yours, to change your life, to change your mind about something, to change your attitude towards someone, whatever it might be. Even if all you can do is accept that there isn't much you can do, that is doing something, in itself. And those choices are what make you stronger. Those choices are what make you wiser. Those choices make your life yours and ultimately makes you you.

You are the master of your own mind. You can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Never forget that.

Coated Jeans!

The article of clothing I want most right now: Coated Jeans!

I've looked for an affordable pair, and haven't found much, but I'm still searching. I absolutely love these ones by Sinclair Elon:

I really like these because they have this great spray paint effect, which is very appealing to the eye, plus the fact that the effect is closer to the bottom of the leg gives people a reason to glance at your great new shoes! I would love to rock these sometime soon.

A few others I liked are these one by DL Nineteen Sixty One:
I liked these ones because they have the same sort of fading effect, although these ones have a more gradual color change.

And these by Current/Elliot, which I love because of the edgy worn in look, which gives them character while still being classy:

Below is a Polyvore design I made with a pair of awesome python patterned coated jeans, leather and studs. The items I used are below with links.

Python & Leather

I love this studded jacket, especially the eyelets.

$420 - farfetch.com
These just seem so awesome! I love the color too.

$375 - farfetch.com
Ok, who doesn't want a pair of studded high tops?

indressme.com
I like the color on this bag, plus it's simple but can really brighten up an outfit.

$60 - debenhams.com
I love bracelets! I don't have any black leather ones yet though...

fredflare.com
I just thought these were super cute. I am such a nerd so I thought it would be fitting to put in som nerd glasses with an edgy outfit.

Thanks for reading!
PS:
If you have a picture of yourself or a friend rocking some coated jeans, put it in the comments. I'd love to see that!

I'm Back Jack!

Sorry about the hiatus on posting guys! School got crazy and there was a death in the family so I had no chance to post whatsoever. But I'm back so hooray!

So, for my first post back, I want to highlight my current fashion fav with one of my picks, the slouchy beanie! I am in love with the oversized beanie look. It's comfortable, casual, but also great if you're having a bad hair day. If you just put one on and peek your bangs out, you'll look great I promise you!

I wore one today and all I did was straighten my hair and put on the beanie! Here's a picture:

Yay!

Some of my favorites that I've found online would have to be from neff. They have a great selection of different styles and colors, plus they say how functional the hat really is in terms of temperature. I absolutely LOVE their daily double beanies, especially this one:

 You can find it here

It's such a pretty color! Anyways, I got a really cheapo one from a hardware store, but I can't wait to order a nice one. Plus I lost the cheapo one already. Whoops.

Hope you guys have a great rest of your day! Adios!

PS: if you're crafty and want to make your own, there are some great patterns over on Ravelry. Check it out here. Have a wonderful day!

Warmth?

Greetings from a pile of blankets and a cup of warm tea.

Our furnace and water heater stopped working last night because our gas isn't coming into the house for some reason. Thus, last night and today are pajama days. The gas company doesn't take calls on sundays, so we can't even call in the problem until tomorrow.

I'm terribly sorry I haven't kept up posting, but school has been crazy this week. I might post something super duper fashionable in a few days, when we get our heat back and I can stand to be in something less than 2 pairs of pajama pants and 4 shirts. OOTD today would be very uninteresting and basically made of fleece.

In hopes you guys are all warm and cozy, I send you a warm fire and hugs. (Be warned that Christmas music will start playing when you open up the page.)

BUT IT'S TOTALLY WORTH IT

Fiona

I went to the Mall of America earlier today with my sister, Fiona. (She's leaving for her sophomore year of college next week, and I want her to have some decent clothing to wear.) I'll post pics of the awesome boots I got soon.

Okay, here's the thing about Fiona; she's drop dead gorgeous, really skinny, has very nice hips and yet she doesn't seem to care. She seems to think that running around in jeans and unflattering T-shirts with science fiction or gaming references on them is nice. Now, I have nothing against the T-shirt with jeans look, but when it's boxy oversized mens shirts in mostly three colors, (Black, Grey, and Navy) it just seems sad. Fiona is so pretty, but she just doesn't care about what she wears.

Now, I've tried and tried and TRIED to get her to dress like a girl. Every time I make her put on a skirt she looks in the mirror, and looks at me with a "Really? You're seriously making me do this?" face. Yet when I look at her, all I can see is a beautiful girl who hides behind unflattering boys clothing.

Maybe I should just leave her alone, but I really don't want her to keep wearing dark colors, T-shirts that don't make sense to a lot of people, and hiding her beauty. She's so pretty, and I think she should be proud. I'm proud of her. Today she bought three shirts and they were ALL colored, not black or grey. For her, that's progress. My frustration with what she wears has kinda become a joke in our family, but I really do care about her, and want her to feel comfortable, but she just doesn't seem to believe me that some brightly colored clothing is comfortable. And that jewelry can be bigger than small stud earrings or a tiny silver necklace with a half-inch fairy on it. She's so delicate and tiny, but she doesn't want to do anything bold with her clothing. I want the best for her, and this shopping trip was her idea, because she knows I care about her and she trusts my opinion enough to let me drag her to my favorite stores and see if she finds anything she likes.

It was a great time, even if it wasn't as successful as we'd hoped. (One of the hallways had a power outage so one of the stores we had wanted to go to wasn't open) We had good conversation, she finally bought me my birthday present (New ankle boots!) and we spoiled our dinners with Cold Stone Creamery ice cream. Overall, it was a great day. :)

Had Some Fun On Polyvore!

First Day of School Outfit

I would love to wear this on my first day!

OOTD 8/15/12

Hey There!

I had an interesting day, where I had a meeting at school, and then I rushed to work. I had to wear something casual for the meeting, but nice enough for work, but also clothes that can get ink on them, because I work at a printmaking center. Crazy, right?

So, here I am!

I'm wearing my fav grey skinnies (City Streets), a thin athletic-ish green hoodie with 3/4 sleeves rolled to half  (I don't remember where or when I got this one and the tag ripped off so I don't even know the brand...), and my tennis shoes. (Nike) {I got 3 blisters from a bad pair of flats and I can't wear my flip flops to work, so tennis shoes for the win!}

Hope everyone's having a calm and relaxing day! Don't hurry, don't worry, and don't forget to smell the flowers!
