New direction?

Hey readers,

This is one of those posts where I am going to ramble and hope it makes sense to you.

I make a lot of things in my life, crafts, art, gifts, surprises... But what I don't make is time to myself. I don't get much alone time. I'm actually afraid of it and avoid it a lot. I'm afraid to be alone and afraid to be by myself because I have this crazy idea that if you're alone you have nothing. I'm slowly figuring out that that's not true. When you are alone, you are with the only person who can pull you through the toughest moments of your life: yourself.

I've been thinking more and more about this blog, and I feel like it's all about image. How I look, what looks good on people, what are my favorite pieces or clothing, accessories etc. That's great, and I know there are a lot of blogs out there about fashion and helping people with their self confidence. But I want mine to be different, I want my blog to be about self expression

How do people express themselves? I think it is different for everybody. For many it's through art or writing. I'm starting to think that those aren't my forte. I know I'm decent at art, and I write okay stories, but I don't feel like I've gotten any feelings out once I've painted a picture, or written a short story. I think my best form of expression is through speaking.

I remember I wrote a speech in my 9th grade Geography class on homophobic bullying in school. I remember that I went first, and after I was done, the whole room clapped and one of the popular girls said "Whoa, beat that." to the girl going next, and there was a friendly chuckle throughout the classroom. I had taken a very controversial topic, and I moved my classroom to think about my points. And trust me, these kids probably had no intention of even listening. But I saw one or two put down their phones, and start paying attention about half way through. They could hear my confident voice, and my passion about equality through my words. It's funny, that was the first time some of them had heard me speak out loud. I was in the first row but I was always quiet. After that day, people included me in more conversations and I didn't feel so alone. Expressing myself didn't get me real friends, but it did give me confidence, a power of all it's own.
A power that only I could give myself.

When I'm upset about something, I talk to people. I usually end up talking to my dad when I'm upset about something that happened at school, or a class mate who is bugging me, because I can talk to him, releasing the anger on the topic, and he is willing to sit there and be that sound board for me. He will be there for me to shout at, hug, cry on his shoulder, whatever I need. And I am so grateful for that.

Expressing yourself isn't always easy. I often end up in tears when I'm trying to say something important. But that never stops me. I always push through the overwhelming emotions and say what I need to say. Sometimes I end up in uncomfortable situations because of what I say, but it's those situations that teach me that speaking up is the right thing to do, whether it's about something good or something bad.

Do something to express yourself after you read this. It doesn't have to be right now, it doesn't even have to be today if you're not ready, but soon, express what you really feel about something or someone. Even if it ends badly you will have spoken out, in some way, shape, or form, and you will know that you can do it again. That is one of my greatest tools, looking back at what I've done before and knowing that I can do it again. If you feel like you want to express yourself here, or tell your story of self expression, feel free to comment.

Express yourself, love yourself, and know that you are enough.

Black Milk is Doing a Harry Potter Collection!

One of my favorite sites, Black Milk, is doing a HP collection of clothing and swimwear! I'm so excited! Check out their website here, and this video they made to preview the collection.

I mean really, check these out! Dealthly Hallows Leggings!

Awesome, right?

I am SO getting some of this stuff once it's for sale. It's super expensive, but I don't care. I'm getting at least one thing for myself. :) The main webpage has a countdown, and there's less than four days left 'til the sale goes live!!

And always remember: embrace your inner bookworm.

First Day of School - What I Wore

I promised I'd post what I wore today so here it is. Casual, not dressy, and in my style. I absolutely love Mickey Mouse, and pretty much all Disney so the tank was definitely the right choice, and my watch is Mickey too. :)

(This was taken just as I got to school. Thus the funky background.)

Jeans: Delia*s (I got these forever ago, but they're still my favorite)
Shoes: Cohesion 5 by Saucony from Famous Footwear
Tank: Target - Juniors Section
Peace Necklace: Kohl's - On clearance
Sunnies: Target - Dollar Section

Hope your first day back (to school or to work) was amazing! What did you wear? Have you found your favorite new sweatshirt or pair of jeans yet? Tell me in the comments!

Back to School! - First Day Outfit

So we all know there's this whole thing with wearing a nice, brand new outfit on the first day of school. I get that, I mean, who wouldn't want to look nice on your first day?

But here's what I'm doing this year: Dressing comfy. Not even nice comfy, but grungy, casual, around the house comfy. Ya know why? Because I want people to know that I don't care what they think of me. I can wear whatever I want and be happy with myself. Other people might be dressing up so that the first impression of them is a good one. In my opinion, actions speak louder than words, AND appearances.

On the first day, if I'm the one who goes up to the new kid and says hi, welcomes them into our school and sits with them at lunch, they're gonna remember that for far longer than they would remember if I'm wearing brand new shoes or the latest jacket from Hollister. My being kind to them on a scary day when they're prolly worried about everything that happens matters more to me and to them than what I happen to be wearing.

Just some thoughts.

<3

I'll post what I do end up wearing on Tuesday. Comment and show me what you'll be wearing! (Or if you already started school, show me what you'll be wearing on a regular day.)

Camp Formal Night

Hey there, more camp fashion!

We dress up for dinner every night, based on the theme of the day. Friday is always formal night. This is a picture of my girl Lucy and I before we went to the main lodge for dinner.

So, my summer formal outfit recommendation: Lace dresses! I loved how comfy mine was! A silver necklace and thin brown belt was all I needed to accessorize because the color popped. I love this dress so much. (I found it at Kohl's.) It was cool enough even though it was near 80 something degrees but I wasn't cold when it cooled off after the sun went down. I would definitely recommend getting a lace dress, even for fall. Pair it with a bomber and some heeled booties and you're all ready to rock!

I had and awesome time at camp this year and Lucy's such a sweetie, I miss her already!

Athletic outfit!

I just got back from camp! I had an awesome time and I happened to mention this blog so one of my cabin mates was kind enough to pose for an athletic outfit picture.

She's got beautiful arms too... Annalee you go girl!

Just for Fun - Disney Dudez

Disney movies have always held a special place in my heart because when I was a kid, my sister and I didn't watch cartoons because we had like 3 channels, but we absolutely loved Disney movies. I found this video and it just made my morning. I've seen it before, but for some reason, it's ten times better today. I love that the boys play the princes AND the princesses. It's pinned to my Pinterest board called Yes. Just Yes.

And that's what I have to say about it. Yes. Just Yes.

Enjoy!

Sing it out guys, it makes your day so much better.

CONvergence & Costuming

I went to a local science fiction convention (CONvergence) and it was awesome! There were loads of amazing costumes, lots of people, and a great time to be had. I recommend you to check it out, it's an incredible experience!

I decided to dress up like Babydoll from the movie Sucker Punch. I made my costume myself, which took almost 20 hours all together. I didn't take pictures during the process because it was about two days before Con and I needed to hurry. However, I took a few while I was wearing it that night. (I apologize for the mirror selfies, but I wanted to share these with you.)

Full costume (minus the extremely uncomfortable shoes)

Close up

What do you think? I altered a pattern for the top and used a basic tutorial for the skirt. I based it on this video's instructions but changed a few things to make it more simple. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments. I'm thinking of making another pleated skirt, so I might do a tutorial on that.

Oh, and one last thing... If you're a geek like me, OWN IT!

Oh Hai Dere!

Hola errybody!

I've decided to take this blog into a bit of a new direction. I won't be strictly posting fashion stuff because I've been doing some thinking on life the universe and everything (yes, I'm a Geek and I'm proud.) and fashion isn't what's extremely important in life. It's just one of the many things that makes life fun. So, my plan is to bring fun into my blog. How that will manifest itself I'm not sure, but I hope to share some of it with you guys. :)

Black Milk = Awesome

My new fav site for when I have lots of clothing money: BLACK MILK!!

They sell leggings, skirts, tops, bathing suits, dresses, body suits, suspenders and shoes. Most of the stuff they have is awesome images printed on fabric, and they have a few geeky categories, including Star Wars, and Middle Earth. (Geeks for the win!) I fell in love with a pair of leggings that just had green pears all over them. Take a look, they are incredibly amazing!

My mom found this awesome dress that she bought my sister for her birthday. It's a white background with a map of Middle Earth across it. AWESOME. You can find it here, because it's totally worth looking at, even if you can't afford it.

The prices are rather large but they have awesome stuff. I love the Star Wars stuff so much! I am definitely planning on shopping this site in the future.

***The prices are in Australian dollars, which is close to US dollars for those of you who use US dollars, but make sure you check how much more what you buy will cost because the cost will be slightly higher in US dollars.***

This link is to the general site, and they have lots of cool stuff to look through! Go check it out!

Spring is coming!

I got the Spring 2013 style guide from JCPenney today and I just realized how excited I am for spring! There is so much cute stuff in store for this spring! I didn't find one thing I didn't like. I mean, I couldn't pull off some of the looks, but none of them were unattractive.

I've been looking at their site for an hour now, and it's got great stuff on there! The thing I love about JCPenney is they have great prices for quality stuff. It's not all high-end designer, but they have a lot of great looking stuff, and they carry a variety of styles so you don't feel like you can't find anything in your style when you walk in.

I need to go there soon... Hmm... Maybe a bit of self reward shopping after this play is over? I think so! :)

By the way that's why I haven't been posting lately. I'm in a production of A Midsummer's Night Dream by William Shakespeare. I play Helena, one of the lovers. (Which is a larger part if you don't know the play very well) So I have been memorizing lines like crazy and I got a part time position at the dream job I have wanted since I was eight. (Yay yay yay!) Needless to say I have been BUSY. The good news is that once the play is over (which it will be in a bit over a week) I can focus more on school and my new job and THIS BLOG. Plus, with a job, that means more money that I can spend on stuff to review and repurpose for this blog! Woohoo!

What are some of your favorite stores for when you're on a budget? What is your favorite thing to do when you get spending money? Shopping? Movies? Candy? Share your answers in the comments section! Stay fabulous!

My LBB Purse

Bad news about my orange purse from Little Black Bag, the super cute one that I was so happy with. It BROKE! :( I talked about it in this post if you don't remember. It was less than a week after I got it and I wasn't stressing it in any unusual way at all. I can't return it because it doesn't fit with the LBB return policy which is very frustrating. I think I can fix it but I don't feel like I should have to fix my brand new purse, that's just silly.

I love the purse and it's a shame that it broke, but I looked and it didn't seem like it was built very well, so I'm not blaming Little Black Bag. I still recommend shopping on that site, the purse mishap was because of the way it was made.

I just needed to vent a little. Sorry 'bout that. :) Enjoy the rest of your day Fashionistas!

Little Black Bag!

Hey guys! I finished my trading on Little Black Bag, and I wanted to show you guys what I got. I'm really happy with what I got, so I thought I'd share, and give you an intro to LBB, in case you're interested.

If you don't know what Little Black Bag is, I highly suggest trying it out! (Here is a link to the site.)

Here's how it works:
You start off by filling out a quiz, they will use your choices later to fill your bag. (Take this part seriously, that way you'll end up with items you're more likely to want.) You get to pick an item that you like from their gallery, then you purchase your "bag". **see below about bags** The stylists on the site choose two other items that they think you will like, based on your quiz answers. You then have 3 days to trade the items that you have in your bag with other people. You can both make trade offers or wait for others to offer trades for your items. (You can also trade more than one item for another item, so for instance if you had two necklaces each worth $45 retail, but you don't like them, you can find another item, and it adds the worth together, so you would able to make a 2 for 1 trade for something around $90.)
Bags:
There's two sizes of bags, the $30 one and the $50 one. I purchased the smaller, because I'm not made of money right now. A warning though: if you're only trying it once, it will go up to $40. Then with shipping it comes to almost exactly $45. So, it's up to you which one you want to get. You have the option to become a member and open a bag monthly. You will get $10 dollars off your first bag if you join. Then your bags really are $30 and $50 from there on out. (That sounded pretty awesome to me, but I can't guarantee that I will have the money each month.) Obviously the choice is up to you, and it's different for everybody. You also have the option of opting out at the beginning of each month, if you don't want to do a bag that month. Meaning you don't have to do it every single month. You can be selective. I decided to just try it out, and pay the $45.

My experience:
Like I said, I bought the smaller sized bag. All that really means is that the items you can choose from for your first item are worth a little less than the $50 bag items. For that reason, I did my best to trade up, meaning trade for something worth slightly more than your item, because I didn't get super great items at first. I traded until I got three things that looked nice and were worth enough to trade for a handbag, because that's what I originally wanted. I made quite a few offers and finally someone took my offer for all three of the items in my bag and I ended up with a handbag. I traded a few more times, and finally settling on this bag. I wasn't getting any more offers worth taking on the third day, and because I traded all three of my items for one, I only had one item to trade with in the end. I ended up ending it a little bit before my 36 hours, and telling them to ship my bag to me, because I was happy with what I got and saw no point to keep trading. So, it's really up to you how it's going to work out. There's not just jewelry and bags either. There's hair products, hats, headphones, things for the home, candles etc. They have a wide range, so even if you don't like what you get at first, or jewelry isn't your thing, no worries. You have choices.

I got the Box Top Handle Satchel from Street Level. I really like the bright orange color, I think it will give some of my darker outfits a splash of color. Also, I really like the box-yness. I have mostly slouchy bags, and I wanted some variety, so I'm really happy with this one. It is $64 at retail price, and I got it for $45. Saving $19 on a bag is pretty good in my opinion, and even if it wasn't a great price, I'm really happy with it, so it's worth it.

What do you guys think? Do you guys have other ways to get good prices on fashionable things? How do you do it? Where do you go? Put your answers in the comments, I'd really like to hear them!

(If you want to try LBB, please use the link I provided above, as it is personalized to this site.)

Thanks fashionistas! Shine on!

Thrift Store Haul!

My mom and I decided to have a night on the town last week so we went out to eat at a local restaurant and went to Arc's Value Village! They have four locations in MN. What I love about Arc is that every week they have one color of tag on sale. They have about 4-5 colors and last week everything with a yellow tag was 50% off. They have a lot of stuff to go through and quite a range of sizes so there's something there for everybody. They don't just sell clothes, they sell furniture, books, handbags, shoes, jewelry, random nicknacks... We were there for about two hours and we had barely even scratched the surface of what they had there. It was so much fun!

My plan for about half of this stuff is to alter it into other things or other pieces of clothing or just make them my size. The other half is just things that I think I needed as staples for my wardrobe that I was severely lacking.

Alteration Piece #1: Giant Circle Colorful Thing
This one was a great find. I love the colors and the design, and the folds intrigue me. It's basically a rounded rectangle of fabric with two side seams to keep it together. The neck is a simple drawstring, so I can really do anything I like with it.

Alteration Piece #2: Zebra Print Vest
This one was also a good find, I like the print and the fabric isn't too rough for me. (I don't like scratchy fabric, AT ALL.) My plan for this one is to shorten it and tailor it in to fit me. It's going to be much more of a fashion vest when I'm done with it.

Alteration Piece #3: Embroidered Vest

This one caught my eye right away because of the beautiful colorful stitching on the front. The embroidery is simply incredible and I could instantly see the front as a clutch. (Or two, there's enough of it.) The back of the vest is made of a simple striped fabric that I could use for the lining. I'm super excited about this one, I just know it's going to be awesome!

Extra Piece #1: Sleeveless Sweater Vest
I liked the front of this, with the fabric pulled back into fabric closures. It is grey, which is a color I try to avoid because so much of my wardrobe is grey and black already, but I really liked it, and everything else I bought was colorful, so I let myself get this one. I think it's a non-staple but a very good piece for layering and switching from casual to fancy or semi-casual. I couldn't get a good picture of it because it's hard to see it on a hanger.

Extra Piece #2: Flowered Sundress

I really liked this one, the flowers are bright enough to pull themselves out of the black. This one fits me really well and it's very comfortable. Made of cotton.

Staple Pieces #1 & #2: Long sleeved Tee's
Just two basic tees, a teal blue and magenta. Simple, but great staples for a wardrobe.

OOTD 1/29/13

Hey guys! I wanted to share my outfit today!

I'm wearing my corset cami from Arizona Jean Co, my grey studded skinny jeans from City Streets, (JCPenny for the win.) my black mid-sleeve blazer from Frenchi, (My aunt sent this to me, she got it from Macy's.) and my Croft & Barrow black suede booties. (I love these boots! I got them at Kohl's within the last few months. So comfy, but very nice!)

With this outfit, I was thinking Casual Classy. It's one of the styles that I choose a lot. I like to mix it up like this, with the casual and much nicer pieces together.

Hope you enjoyed! What's a style that you like? What do you like to do to mix up your wardrobe? Comment with your answers!!

Birthday Portrait

My mom has had my sister and I take a birthday portrait every year since we were born, and I took mine for this year in December. My birthday is in June. Yeah, we're on top of things. NOT.

Well this year my mom let me pick the outfit for a change and I think I did a pretty good job. I loved using these sunglasses for a prop, I think it brings more to the pictures. I got them at Ragstock if you're interested. The earrings are just from Claire's. (Also, you can't see it in these pictures, but I'm wearing bright pink skinny jeans and purple converse low tops.)

Add in some attitude...

My bracelets were really important to me in these pictures, and it's a shame that you can't see them so well. I made some of them and others were given to me, so they each mean something to me. Do you guys have any jewelry or clothing that holds memories? Share it in the comments.

Have a great day fashionistas!

Macy's Shopping Haul!

Hey, I promised my latest Clothing Haul, so here it is! (It's not exactly a haul, as it's only two things, but I love them so I don't care what it's called.) I went to Macy's yesterday and picked up these two things:

Here's the jacket I got. It's from B Hip by Me Jane. It's got a studded collar and an asymmetrical zipper, motorcycle style. It's a lighter jacket, more of a late spring/summer nights/early fall type thing, but I can wear it around inside, like at school for instance.

Ok, here's my studded wedge sneakers from Material Girl. I've wanted a pair of these for a while, and I finally have one! Here's the breakdown: I really like the zipper, because I don't need to untie and tie them every time I want to put them on/take them off. They're a dark blue inside, which you can see a little of in this picture at the edge, near the zipper and they're comfy, which is hard to achieve in a wedge shoe. I love them, and there's not much more to say beyond that.

So that's what I got at Macy's. (I also got socks but I didn't think that those would be very exciting, so I didn't put them in.) Do you guys think I did well? Comment and tell me!

Shopping Haul

Hey guys!
I finally took pictures of the clothes haul I got during the holidays. The following is each piece and what I have to say about it. I got all of this from JCPenny.

First up: my new red jeans! (These are the Sparkle Skinny Jeans from Truce in red. They also come in blue and purple. Link is right here.) I love these jeans. The denim is really soft, and I love how the sides are dyed black. They are bedazzled, and I usually don't like that, but in this case, I don't think it's too much.

Here's a close up of the rhinestones, and the way the black dye fades out into the red:

Ok, next up is this purple over-shirt. (This one is from Arizona Jean Co. I couldn't find it on the website though, so I can't give you a link.) It's not very thick, and it's not very warm, and it's definitely for warmer weather than we have right now. I tied it up, but it is full length, and long sleeved, but the sleeves can be rolled up.

Ok, here is the Cherry Rose Railroad Corset Cami, also from Arizona Jean Co. This can be found here. This tank surprised me when I saw it from afar, because it's actually made of soft denim. I wasn't expecting that, but it's quite comfortable, and shapes well to my body form because the back is stretchable. (It's all scrunchy because it is sewn with elastic thread. You know what I mean, right?)

Next are my teal pants! These are from B.Wear, and again, I can't find them on the site, but these are close to the same thing. They're super awesome and they make me smile when I wear them. They feel like more of dress pants, because they're 75% rayon, but they have Nylon and Spandex for the other 25%, so they're sturdy but stretchy enough to be comfortable. I personally think that these are great for a casual friday kinda thing, because they do look professional enough to wear to an office, but the color is quite bold. (PS; they do need ironing if you crinkle them up, so fold them nicely and take care of them.)

So that's all I got over the holidays! I will post my next haul very soon, as I did go shopping today, and I got a few awesome things.

Smile on fashionistas! Feel free to comment, I love getting your feedback!

Tube Top Tutorial

Hey guys!

Sorry I haven't been posting lately, I got really busy with the end of the semester. So now that I have some free time, I decided to make a tutorial for you guys. In this tut, I will show you how to make a tube top from a T-shirt. Now, the T-shirt should be a size or two larger than your normal size, because if it's not, it could end up being too tight, which would be a shame.

Ok, here goes!

Take one T-shirt, a size or two too big for you and lay it flat, making sure all the wrinkles are out.

Mark two straight lines from the very top to the bottom, just outside of the arm seams. It's hard to tell in my picture, but I used tape to make it more visible.

Now cut along the line you marked.
And you're left with...

This! Tada!

Now mark a straight line across the top, just below the collar, getting as close to it as possible without actually touching it.

Snip snip snip!

Flip the two pieces and line them up, right sides together. MAKE SURE THEY LINE UP NICELY, OTHERWISE THE TOP COULD GET OUTTA WHACK.

Pin and..

Sew up the sides.

Flip it right-side-out

Fold over the top for a drawstring.

Like so, and pin...

Ok, this pic is a little confusing, but basically it means mark the center front and leave a space for the tie. Use a zig zag stitch, as this has more give and allows it to stretch a bit when you put it on.

This is just showing the space to leave open. Mine is actually a little bigger than necessary, I would suggest making it maybe to finger widths wide instead of the three that I did.

Make/find your drawstring. I used strips of a red T-Shirt to accent the words on my shirt.

I'm assuming here that you guys know how to put in a drawstring, just push it through the tube you made by folding over the top.

Tie your drawstring and TADA you're finished.

Here is me wearing the completed piece! (ignore the messy room please)
Front

Side

Other Side

Thanks guys! If you do use this tutorial, please post your finished pictures in the comments, or if you have questions, ask away. Stay fabulous!
